Many farmers and workers in developing countries struggle to provide for their families. 

 

Unfair trade rules mean that the price they get for their crops does not cover the costs of production. 

 

Fairtrade guarantees a better deal for farmers and workers.

You can identify products by the FAIRTRADE Mark.  It means that farmers and plantation workers receive

​

  • A fair and stable price for their products to support their families and provide for a better future.

  • An extra payment or premium to invest in their community to improve health care, water supplies and schools.

  • Support to limit the use of chemicals, recycle waste and protect the environment.

 

Buying Fairtrade makes a real difference to individual lives and communities.

Fairtrade in Glossopdale

 

Fairtrade started in Glossopdale in 1983 when Stewart Smith set up a Traidcraft stall at Zion Methodist Church in Glossop. 

 

Then in 2006 the Glossopdale Fairtrade Group was formed to campaign for Fairtrade Zone status for all of Glossopdale. 

 

Many Church Fairtraders were joined by others including High Peak Borough Councillors, Schools, Organizations and people who run Fairtrade businesses in Glossop. 

 

In 2010 Glossopdale was recognized by the Fairtrade Foundation and became a Fairtrade Zone. 

 

Fairtrade status has been confirmed again in 2011 and 2013.   

 

 

What does a Fairtrade Zone mean?

 

  • Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade products

 

  • ​A range of Fairtrade products are readily available in the area’s retail outlets (shops, supermarkets, newsagents and petrol stations) and served in local catering outlets (cafés, restaurants, pubs).
     

  • Local workplaces and community organisations (places of worship, schools, universities, colleges and other community organisations) support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products whenever possible.
     

  • Media coverage and events raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community.
     

  • A local Fairtrade steering group is convened to ensure the Fairtrade Town campaign continues to develop and gain new support.
